From April 17 to July 1, 2018, the rooms 2 and 3 of the Pinacoteca host the exhibition L’Uomo Divino. Ludovico Lazzarelli and the “Mantegna Tarocchi” in the Ambrosiana collections. The exhibition, curated by Laura Paola Gnaccolini, shows 28 engravings from the oldest and most famous printed series made in Northern Italy in the second half of the fifteenth century, but also the most mysterious, as far as the possible author, the place of production and purpose of realization are concerned.

The so-called “Mantegna Tarocchi” are composed of 50 burin engravings of the finest quality, characterized by a very thin trait, minute details and a refined cross-hatching for the shadings. They are arranged into five series of 10 elements each, which together represent man as the microcosm and the universe as the macrocosm.

In the past, critics assumed erroneously this engraving series could be an unusual tarot deck for various reasons: they have come to the present day mostly in loose copies, they are similar in size to playing cards and some of their iconographies possibly derive from the oldest tarot decks.

The Ambrosiana engravings are also embellished with golden highlights and various details in gold leaf, which are still noticeable on some sheets.
